%E3%80%80The+business+environment+surrounding+shipping+companies+has+been+changing+significantly%2C+due+to+factors+such+as+heightened+geopolitical+risks+and+changes+in+international+and+domestic+rules+related+to+governance.+Takuji+Banno%2C+Senior+Managing+Executive+Officer+of+NYK%2C+who+became+CFO+%28Chief+Financial+Officer%29+and+head+of+the+Corporate+Planning+Headquarters+in+April%2C+said+from+his+position+overseeing+a+headquarters+with+many+administrative+divisions%3A+%E2%80%9C%28The+headquarters%29+functions+as+the+backbone+that+supports+the+company.+We+will+stay+attuned+to+changes+in+the+environment+and+respond+flexibly.%E2%80%9C+We+asked+him+about+how+he+intends+to+steer+the+headquarters+and+his+thinking+on+the+next+medium-term+management+plan.+%3Cbr%3E%28Interviewers%3A+Yohei+Misaki+and+Azumi+Kashiwai%29+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+Responding+flexibly+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--How+will+you+steer+the+Corporate+Planning+Headquarters%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CThere+are+nine+groups+at+the+headquarters%2C+and+all+of+them+are+administrative+divisions+except+for+the+passenger+ship+business+group.+Their+role+is+to+steadily+keep+the+functions+that+support+the+company%E2%80%99s+core+operations+running.+The+environment+surrounding+corporate+administrative+divisions+is+also+changing+significantly%2C+with+revisions+to+the+Corporate+Governance+Code+promoted+by+the+Financial+Services+Agency%2C+new+lease+accounting+standards%2C+and+mandatory+sustainability+disclosure.+I+believe+it+is+important+for+each+group+to+properly+grasp+these+changes+and+respond+promptly+and+in+a+timely+manner.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+Risk+tolerance+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--The+external+environment+surrounding+the+shipping+industry+itself+is+changing+significantly%2C+with+rising+geopolitical+risks+and+other+factors.+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CIn+my+personal+view%2C+ocean-going+shipping+is+basically+not+bound+by+the+particular+circumstances+or+rules+of+specific+countries+or+blocs.+Of+course%2C+there+are+cases+like+this+one+in+which+ships+have+ended+up+being+held+up+in+the+Persian+Gulf%2C+but+it+is+possible+to+respond+by%2C+for+example%2C+not+deploying+ships+to+conflict+areas.+Compared+with+industries+such+as+manufacturing%2C+where+assets+cannot+be+moved+from+a+given+location%2C+it+is+relatively+resilient+to+geopolitical+risks.+Naturally%2C+we+will+continue+to+properly+fulfill+our+responsibilities+as+a+social+infrastructure+business%2C+but+I+believe+that+with+flexible+responses+and+strong+information-gathering+capabilities%2C+we+can+more+than+adequately+deal+with+such+risks.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+What+to+aim+for+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--What+is+the+progress+of+the+current+management+plan%2C+and+what+are+the+challenges+for+the+next+medium-term+management+plan%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CI+was+involved+in+formulating+the+current+medium-term+management+plan+when+I+was+the+executive+officer+in+charge+of+the+Planning+Group%2C+and+it+became+a+comprehensive+plan+that%2C+rather+than+following+precedent%2C+set+out+what+we+should+work+on+by+backcasting+from+our+ideal+future+form+to+the+position+we+are+in+now.+In+a+sense%2C+there+is+also+an+aspect+in+which+the+specific+details+took+shape+only+after+the+medium-term+management+plan+got+underway.+We+presented+individual+%E2%80%99stories%E2%80%99+for+CX+%28corporate+transformation%29%2C+DX+%28digital+transformation%29%2C+decarbonization%2C+and+other+areas%2C+and+each+gradually+took+on+substance+and+was+brought+to+completion.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CWe+are+entering+the+final+year+and+it+is+time+to+conduct+a+review%2C+while+at+the+same+time+we+are+working+on+formulating+a+new+medium-term+management+plan.+Discussions+are+being+led+mainly+by+executive+officers%2C+and+they+will+begin+in+earnest+in+the+first+half+of+fiscal+year+2026.+In+terms+of+content%2C+the+current+medium-term+management+plan+is+already+quite+comprehensive%2C+and+its+core+direction+has+been+established.+The+next+medium-term+management+plan+will+likely+be+a+more+advanced+version+of+that%2C+focused+on+how+to+take+our+efforts+so+far+to+the+next+level.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CLooking+back+on+my+involvement+in+formulating+the+current+medium-term+management+plan%2C+the+core+strategies+%28AX%2C+BX%29+were+based+on+the+twin+pillars+of+deepening+our+core+businesses+and+developing+new+businesses%2C+but+there+were+also+aspects+in+which+we+were+unable+to+clearly+define+the+positioning+of+new+businesses.+When+we+spoke+of+new+businesses%2C+we+had+envisioned+%E2%80%99island-type%E2%80%99+businesses+%28ones+distant+from+our+existing+businesses%29%2C+but+in+reality+we+achieved+a+certain+degree+of+success+in+adjacent+areas+through+a+series+of+ammonia+fuel-related+initiatives%2C+including+the+acquisition+of+a+European+healthcare+logistics+business%2C+our+largest+acquisition+to+date%2C+an+investment+in+a+European+offshore+vessel+company%2C+and+the+construction+of+an+ammonia-fueled+tug.+In+addition%2C+over+the+past+three+years%2C+we+have+placed+greater+emphasis+on+investing+in+business+entities+rather+than+assets%2C+through+initiatives+such+as+the+acquisition+of+a+business+from+ENEOS+Ocean+%28now+NYK+Energy+Ocean%29+and+making+Saga+Welco+a+wholly+owned+subsidiary%2C+while+working+to+enhance+the+corporate+value+of+the+Group+as+a+whole.+As+a+result%2C+this+effectively+took+the+place+of+new+business+development.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+CX+and+DX+progress+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--What+about+support+strategies%2C+such+as+developing+digital+infrastructure%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CCX+and+DX+have+made+significant+progress.+In+terms+of+CX%2C+which+promotes+transformation+in+human+resources%2C+organizations%2C+and+group+management%2C+the+idea+has+taken+root+that+rather+than+being+controlled+by+the+huge+headquarters+in+Tokyo%2C+each+business+and+base+is+what+supports+NYK.+We+have+also+created+an+environment+in+Japan+where+talented+people+from+overseas+can+work+comfortably%2C+and+this+also+comes+at+a+time+when+global+talent+mobility+is+increasing.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9COne+example+is+Yusen+Logistics.+The+membership+of+the+highest+executive-level+decision-making+body+of+Yusen+Logistics+Global+Management%2C+the+coordinating+company%2C+has+been+narrowed+to+six+people%2C+and+two+of+them+are+non-Japanese%2C+including+the+former+president+of+the+U.S.+subsidiary.+They+also+candidly+share+issues+at+headquarters+from+an+external+perspective%2C+and+things+are+moving+in+a+very+positive+direction.+In+addition%2C+by+changing+the+structure+so+that+each+local+subsidiary+reports+directly+to+the+headquarters%2C+faster+decision-making+has+become+possible.+On+the+other+hand%2C+because+management+and+governance%2C+including+personnel+evaluations%2C+also+need+to+be+viewed+worldwide+under+the+same+framework%2C+intermediate+organizations+have+been+retained.+In+the+shipping+business%2C+the+relationship+inevitably+tends+to+become+one+between+headquarters+and+agents%2C+but+in+reality+each+operating+company+and+local+subsidiary+acts+independently%2C+including+in+financing%2C+and+we+will+renew+our+recognition+of+that+and+transform+ourselves+into+an+organization+that+can+operate+organically.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--Regarding+EX+%28energy+transformation%29%2C+some+believe+there+has+been+a+shift+in+the+trend+toward+decarbonization%2C+partly+due+to+developments+under+the+Trump+administration+in+the+United+States.+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CWe+are+in+the+service+industry%2C+and+it+is+important+to+respond+firmly+and+flexibly+to+what+customers+want.+At+the+same+time%2C+the+direction+toward+net+zero+for+GHG+%28greenhouse+gas%29+emissions+from+our+ships+is+clear%2C+and+unless+there+is+a+very+major+change+in+the+midterm+measure+NZF+%28Net+Zero+Framework%29+currently+under+discussion+at+the+IMO+%28International+Maritime+Organization%29%2C+we+will+not+abandon+that+commitment.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CHowever%2C+the+supply+of+alternative+fuels+that+emit+zero+or+close+to+zero+CO2+%28carbon+dioxide%29+is+limited+to+begin+with.+With+the+overall+trend+lagging+behind+what+had+been+assumed+when+the+current+medium-term+management+plan+was+formulated%2C+the+realistic+response+will+be+to+bridge+the+gap+with+fuels+such+as+LNG+%28liquefied+natural+gas%29%2C+which+have+relatively+limited+emissions-reduction+effects.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+Quickly+obtain+key+indicators+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--ROIC+%28return+on+invested+capital%29+is+used+in+management.+From+the+standpoint+of+a+CFO%2C+I+would+like+to+hear+your+thinking.+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CLast+year%2C+we+overhauled+our+core+systems+and+established+a+framework+that+enables+us+to+quickly+obtain+the+necessary+indicators%2C+including+ROIC.+Until+then%2C+some+processes+were+still+done+manually%2C+and+there+was+a+considerable+time+lag+before+the+figures+could+be+broken+down+into+ROIC+by+division.+Now+we+have+a+system+in+place+that+allows+us+to+obtain+the+necessary+indicators+at+a+granular+level%2C+such+as+by+ship+type.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CIn+divisions+where+ROIC+should+be+improved%2C+we+have+already+analyzed%2C+in+the+form+of+logic+trees+and+the+like%2C+how+to+work+toward+improvement+and+considered+measures%2C+but+making+the+figures+visible+in+a+timely+manner+will+enable+more+effective+initiatives.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--Depending+on+the+division%2C+there+may+be+cases+where+conspicuous+ROIC+figures+do+not+emerge+in+comparison+to+other+divisions.+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CIn+the+logistics+business%2C+a+priority+investment+field%2C+we+have+made+considerable+investments.+Although+we+have+been+told+that+there+are+issues+with+ROIC+%28because+invested+capital+has+expanded%29%2C+this+will+improve+as+depreciation+steadily+progresses%2C+leading+to+an+increase+in+the+NYK+Group%E2%80%99s+overall+corporate+value.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+Also+expanding+into+new+customer+segments+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--In+the+cruise+business%2C+a+newbuild+%28%
